mind-body-voice coaching for singers and other performers
joyful, judgment-free mind-body-voice coaching for wellbeing
For Singers
Your voice is a mirror for the state of your body and mind. When something is off physically or emotionally, your voice often reflects that–sometimes subtly and sometimes not so subtly.
While technique and vocal pedagogy are hugely important, they can only take you so far when your nervous system has decided that the high note is a threat, and your muscles have tensed so much that you can no longer hit it. Sometimes the “vocal” issues that singers run into have more to do with the mind and body than the actual voice.
And freeing the voice is only half the story. Once your body and nervous system are on board, the real fun begins: discovering what your voice can do, exploring new colors and textures, and shaping a sound that’s unmistakably yours.
SomaSong voice coaching is a holistic approach that combines nervous system regulation and somatic techniques, vocal pedagogy and artistry, mind-body tools, and performance coaching. This method draws on my years of training and experience as a singer, psychotherapist, yoga instructor, and somatic practitioner.
Singing and the Nervous System
Your nervous system state has a direct impact on your voice. When the nervous system is in a heightened state (e.g. anxiety, stress, fight-or-flight), the larynx tends to rise, the breath often becomes shallow, and many of the muscles that directly impact our vocalization tighten, causing our sound to feel thinner, tighter, pressed, or unnecessarily effortful. This is why you might nail your song when you practice at home, but the minute you’re in a high-pressure setting, your voice cracks or you lose your vibrato or you sound strained. On the flip side, when the nervous system is in a freeze or shutdown state, the voice tends to feel soft, breathy, and disconnected. Essentially, if your nervous system feels threatened, it is difficult to sing at your best.
Nervous system dysregulation is a common yet under-discussed reason that singers get blocked or feel like they’re not progressing despite years of lessons. Learning to regulate your nervous system can change your life, both on and offstage, which is why nervous system tools are a central component of SomaSong.
Singing and the Mind
As a psychotherapist by training, I know personally and professionally how powerful our minds can be. The nervous system tends to react to our thoughts as if they are literally true. If you tell yourself that a particular passage is too hard, your nervous system may start to treat it as a threat, and the song will likely become more difficult to sing because your muscles have tensed up. Our thoughts about singing can very easily turn into self-fulfilling prophecies. While SomaSong is not psychotherapy, it does take into account the effect that our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and past experiences can have on our singing.
Singing and the Body
As a singer, your body is your instrument, and sometimes instruments need tuning. I am perpetually in awe of how small changes in the body can create major effects on the voice. Sometimes a simple movement exercise or stretch can completely change how a note sounds or how easy it feels. Sometimes something as simple as bending your knees more or releasing your jaw can be the difference between a note feeling free or squeezed. SomaSong treats the body as an essential component of singing.
Artistry and Authenticity
Beyond helping singers with stumbling blocks in the mind, body, and voice, a major goal of my coaching is to help singers find their most authentic sound. Your voice is an extension of yourself, and you deserve to sing in a way that feels genuine to who you are. So many singers feel like they’ve been forced into a box (e.g. you’re a musical theater mezzo, so you need to learn to sound like a quintessential musical theater mezzo). While I can help you break down and achieve a particular sound, I especially enjoy helping people discover and bring out what makes their voice unique.
I also love to help singers play with different vocal textures, colors, phrasings, and sounds, so that every song you sing becomes a work of art only you could have created. Whether you’re a singer-songwriter looking to add vocal interest to your piece or whether you’re looking to put your own spin on a cover of a song, I’d love to help.

Who is it for?
While I am happy to work with singers of all genres, I specialize in contemporary vocal styles (musical theatre, rock, pop, jazz, indie, singer-songwriter, folk, etc.), and I especially love helping singers with the following types of problems:
-
You feel like you’ve hit a block, ceiling, or plateau with your voice. You know you’re capable of more, but something is getting in your way.
-
You can nail your song at home, but your voice tightens or shrinks when the stakes are raised (auditions, performances, recording studio, etc.).
-
You feel that past experiences (a critical teacher, a bad audition, a mean review, a difficult event, etc.) or mental blocks (comparison to others, perfectionism, imposter syndrome, etc.) are impacting your voice.
-
You struggle with muscle tension, and it’s impacting your vocal freedom.
-
You’ve spent years trying to sound like someone else, and you want to discover your own authentic sound.
-
You want to be an artist, not just a singer. You want to explore the different colors and textures your voice can bring to a song.
-
You’re looking for vocal freedom, ease, and authenticity.

Singing for Wellness
SomaSong isn’t just for experienced singers! It’s for anyone who wants to learn to use their voice as a tool for wellbeing.
The relationship between the voice and the nervous system goes both ways; our nervous system impacts our voice, and our voice also impacts our nervous system. Singing, humming, and chanting are powerful tools for regulation and wellbeing. If you’re looking for a wellness practice that is a little outside the box, SomaSong could be a great option.
Depending on your goals and interests, SomaSong for wellness can focus on nervous system regulation via mind-body exercises and meditation songs (like a yoga class for your voice), or we can work on any song you love (any genre, no judgment about how “good” it sounds).
It is my goal to provide a safe, fun, completely non-judgmental space for anyone who wants to become better acquainted with their own voice. I love working with people who think they “can’t sing”, people who are terrified of singing in front of others, people who haven’t sung in years, and people who are simply curious about the process of singing. Wherever you are in your voice journey, there is a place for you here.
SomaSong for Wellness might be a good fit for you if:
-
You want a nervous-system practice that goes beyond breathwork or meditation.
-
You’ve always wanted to sing but something has stopped you (belief that you’re a “bad” singer, stage fright, etc.).
-
The thought of singing in front of anyone terrifies you, and you’d like that to change.
-
You’re simply curious about your voice and what it can do.
-
You love to sing for fun and want a joyful, judgment-free space to do it.
-
You’re drawn to practices like humming, chanting, or song circles as a way to feel more grounded and connected.

About Abby
I fell in love with singing as a small child. When I was a toddler, one of my favorite activities was watching a musical scene from a Barney or Disney VHS, begging my parents to rewind the tape, and then performing the song for them. I seem to have emerged from the womb with a love of performing, but I was not a naturally gifted singer. I have visceral memories of recording myself singing on the family tape recorder and crying because of how terrible I thought I sounded. However, I loved it too much to let that deter me. I started formal singing training when I was eight, taking voice lessons and eventually performing with a touring children’s choir. Though I appreciate my classical foundations, my true musical passions have always been split between musical theater and rock/indie music. My recent musical endeavors include local theater (recent credits include Lizzie Borden in Lizzie the Musical and Betty Haynes in White Christmas), performing my original indie folk rock music, and leading song circles and meditative concerts with my original vocal meditation music.
Alongside performing, I’m a licensed professional counselor, a yoga teacher with nearly ten years of experience, and a somatic practitioner. SomaSong emerged when I applied my professional training to my own voice journey. After some difficult experiences (including an emotionally abusive music teacher, chronic illness that forced me to give up performing for a while, and severe muscle tension in my throat), I experienced major blocks in my own voice that technique alone couldn’t seem to touch. Through my work as a trauma therapist, I began to realize just how much our emotions and nervous system state impacts the voice, and finally my own vocal issues started to make sense. After nearly two decades of voice lessons, I finally found vocal freedom again when I started working with my mind, body, and nervous system, rather than solely focusing on vocal technique. I built SomaSong to help others do the same.

Important: What this is (and isn't)
SomaSong is somatic voice practice. It is not psychotherapy, and it is not a substitute for mental health treatment. While the work can be calming, supportive, and helpful for people whose voices are affected by anxiety or difficult experiences, it does not include therapeutic processing, diagnosis, or treatment of mental health conditions. If you're working through significant trauma or mental health concerns, I'm happy to recommend appropriate therapeutic support alongside (or instead of) this work.
SomaSong is not substitute for medical voice care. If you're working with a medical vocal condition, SomaSong can complement care from an ENT or voice specialist, it but doesn't replace it.
A note from Abby
If you've quit voice lessons because they triggered shutdown, panic, or shame — you're not broken, and there isn't something wrong with you. Your nervous system was protecting you from something it perceived as unsafe, and you needed a different door in. That door is what I built.
